Temple of Aphaia

On top οf the hill of Ayia Marina, which is filled with pine-trees, lays the temple of Aphaia. It was built on the 6th century b.c. and has a well preserved Dorian architecture. Truly remarkable is the fact that together with the Acropolis in Athens, the temple of Aphaia has equal distance from the temple of Poseidon in Sounio, shaping an isosceles triangle. The pediments of the temple depict battles between Greeks and Trojans. In the centre of the temple was a statue of goddess Athena. Nowadays, the sculptures adorn the Museum of Munich. To visit the temple of Aphaia you can go by bus (5min. from the village of Aghia Marina). If you like walking, the archeological path (starting from the village) is a very good choice and by the time you reach the top of the hill you will see a beautiful view.
